What does Biometric mean?

Biometric is the calculation of an individual’s body measurements, being fingerprint, hand, eye or face.

The most prevalent type used is fingerprint scanners for Time & Attendance purposes. There are hand punches and facial recognition, but these are less commonly used.

Biometric fingerprint scanners scan significant landmarks of the fingerprint pattern. The sensor then enters that data into a computer system, where they are processed into a set of numbers known as a template. The template is a mathematical representation to verify the user.

What are Timesheets?

Timesheets are a common way for employees to record the hours they work. Staff fill out a paper form or an excel spreadsheet with their start, finish and possibly break times. These are then collected or emailed to payroll and are then keyed manually into the system the company uses.

The term timesheets is still commonly used, even within a software system. There is a timesheet page within our software, biotime, but instead of being a highly manual and time consuming task, it is all automated. See more about biotime here.

What is Buddy Punching?

Buddy Punching is a term used to describe when an employee signs in to work for someone else. For many years, a common way to capture staff attendance has been with a Punch Clock. Punch Clocks are usually situated at the entrance of a workplace, and when staff arrived they would take their employee card off a rack next to the machine and insert it, resulting in a time and date stamp being “punched” on the card. The same goes for leaving work and possibly meal breaks. Employees could ask their “buddy” to “punch” them in if they arrived late or left early.
